Thurs Oct 7th I skinned a squirrel brought in yesterday and cleaned his skull which took me most of the morning. Hal went bird hunting for guinea fowl but was no more successful than I. In the While we were eating the D.C. arrived and so Hal and I rushed out to take pictures of him as we entered the compound and stepped out of his hammock. He had a tremendous retinue of people and was accompanied by 3 gentleman in hammocks like himself The Liberian flag was carried in front of his hammock. <Drawing of hammock> These hammocks with their covers are merely a cover with a cross bar at each end for the men to carry with. The hammock is supported from the ends of a longitudinal pole. Later in the afternoon we went over to call on the commissioner – a purely social call. He is a short fat little man who looks soft but apparently is quite strict with the natives. We talked about the expedition and the country etc and looked over the maps parts of which he said were made from native reports. Hence tappi town is some 25 miles out.

When we first arrived there I found a N.Y. times – Sunday Jan 24 1926 – Complete. I read the sporting page section.

Later we had a row with Sando whom we fined the other day because he lost his way instead of keeping with the porters and never got to the French Border. He said he shouldn’t be fined and got quite fresh for which we told him to go to the kitchen – and he refused saying “I want my 10 shillings”. So we have him a kick in the behind and told him to go. He then upon reported us to the commissioner. Dr. Strong and Shattuck went for a walk and Hal and I took the time to ration the sugar. After supper we sat around and talked for a while before going to bed.
