Tues Aug 31st. a day of rest with small showers. Dave & I went collecting I with a gun, Dave with a basket. I shot 2 birds – a rust colored fly catcher and a beautiful red & black bird.

When we got back we found that Dr. Shattuck had just come in with news that Bequaert was now in Reppues town. As one of his porters had a well marked case of vitiligo I took some pictures of him. By the way before we went collecting I sent 20 porters off for Zeanshue with boxes.

In the P.M. I skinned out the two birds which I had shot. Then came a bath – a luxury for me – and another tremendous meal - Ill die soon. In the evening Martin poured boiling water on his foot which required grease and bandages before going to bed.

Wed Sept. 1st Just before dark 100 porters came singing in carrying the district commissioner Clarke in a big covered hammock. Shattuck went to call on him & got the 100 porters for our use in the morning.
