Thur Aug 26th  A few porters came in this morning so we were able to send off Dr. Strong, Allen & Coolidge to Reppues town – the next jump. Then as the sun was bright in the heavens I spread my entire outfit over the ground to dry – It is the first sun – real sun in 2 weeks and it is needed. Everything is mildewed and mouldy, Fungi are growing in all my boxes, The glue is running from out all glued spots, and the leather cases are rotting away. However I got everything really dry and all moulds brushed out. I also redried my movie films packed damp at Kaka town and straight films also wet. I greased all leather cases and in general got things tidied up and in excellent shape. This took till 300 when it rained again – but I had every thing put away just in time. At about 400 the rain stopped so that I could take half a dozen pictures around town.

Memmeh town is not inspiring. It consists of a bold front with very little behind. <Drawing of Memmeh town> The Road commisioners house & our dwelling are both palacious but the rest of the huts are small thatched huts – dirty and with practically no light inside them. There are only about a dozen inhabitants so that half of the huts are deserted. One hut boast of 2 ladies and a very tame monkey who might be termed to be living examples of symbiosis – First they pore over the monkey for parasites – which Bequaert upon joining them found to be absent. Then he retaliates in kind – with probably better success.

Every body went to bed at 700 except Shattuck & I. We talked till midnight so it seemed – 815 actually
