Wed Aug 18th  Dr. Strong and I took a walk to Binda in the morning – about 20 minutes E. along the road & 10 minutes south on a trail. It is about the same size as Kakatown but the houses are smaller & more native looking. They are largely round huts thatch roofed and without any light except that coming thru half shut front & back doors. I took some pictures of a mandingo school book and two students but the teacher was shy & wouldn’t come forth until we promised not to take his picture. We examined a few patients & found a young boy with a very rapid & powerful heart beat and a marked anaemia whose blood we sampled. I also got a photo of the chief who suffers from some slight mental softening.

When we got back to Kakka I took some pictures of the chiefs newest (and youngest) damsels and of the chief himself amongst them – but it was very dark and I don’t expect very good results.

In the afternoon it rained quite hard so that we were forced to be quite idle. Later I went out shooting but only got some pigeons for chop. Whenever Johnson & Walker are not in our shack they sit on their own porch watching us like cats. I dont dare smoke now for they take them by handfuls and whats worse ask for them.

Today as we were paying off some porters supplied by Walker we had a further insight into his sweet nature. I had just counted – twice – 10 shillings and given them to him to give the men. However he turned to me a moment later & said there are only 9 – I had to give him another.
