Subject

August 10th.

Had to walk to a plantation four miles away and four back with a very sore foot -- a large blister over the Achilles tendon. This was necessary owing to the fact that Shattuck and Coolidge went off hunting on Sunday and hence it was necessary for me to stop the porters from coming here on Wednesday. Also I will have to send a runner to Owens Grove and stop the porters from being there the following day. The boats for us to cross the river in came yesterday and must be held until tomorrow. All this because the temptation to go elephant hunting was too much for Coolidge and George. Coolidge was to have gotten certain supplies before we left here. Shattuck in his excitement to go carried off the keys to the money and all the medical supplies. (They returned the evening of August 13th and reported that they had seen no elephants and that they had shot one monkey, which, however, they did not bring in.)

Whitman has gotten some moving pictures of several of the native dancers. On Monday he filmed a picture of a Bassa dance in Yongfo and yesterday on Plantation No. 4 he got a picture of a Bassa devil dance, a Grebbo dance and a Vai dance.

Today, August 11th, we are packing camp equipment preparatory to moving tomorrow. But will we get off? We can not hold our medical clinic today as all the medical supplies are locked up. I will provide against this occurring again.
