Fri Aug 13th – A day of comparative Leisure. We found one case of suspected Leprosy but after many scrapings we could find no Bacilli – what we did find, however, was a lot of small parasites in the epithelia cells of the skin.- Dr. Strong studied the specimens with a microscope most of the day. As we got a little sun we did our best to dry clothes, sheets blankets etc which were still wet from the heavy rains of the Du. I also put in the spare time of the morning catching tiger Beetles for Bequaert which I noticed running round. In the middle of the central square is a’ tree with a set of posts about 2 ft high around it . in this enclosure is a small carved stick – a fetish and another smooth stick on which is placed nailed a plate.
In the afternoon I skinned out a squirrel which Dunbar brought in and as I am very it was my first mammal I took a good deal of time preparing it. Also I had to guess at the best methods of stuffing it – and I suspect that I can improve my technique. However, experience cannot be got from books & he is better than nothing.
There is one lady – rather pleasant looking, who is our benefactress and provides us with chickens, or rice, etc. She serves to be the queen of the town – and lives up to it. She speaks no English.
I took another swim in the afternoon with Dr. Strong who has not been feeling at all well lately having had a slight fever. NO porters came in today altho we have sent for them from all directions – whats more they probably wont come either.
