Thur June 24th
A beautiful day – though cool breezes sweep over us. The coast of France is barely distinguishable through the Eastern haze. - It has been a day of continued exercise and rest – we have walked the decks for hours – we have played deck tennis, shuffle board and other sundry games – some of us have slept for hours, I suppose the after effect of working so hard in London, and we have eaten. Really that is the best thing we have done and by far the most regular. I’m afraid that they feed us too well and that by the time we reach the shorts of Africa we will have become regular gourmands.
I think probably that the other passengers find it difficult to understand why we Americans are so anxious to go tearing up and down the decks, with perspiration streaming from off our brows. And maybe some of our expedition feel the same way although we all join in the sport. And perhaps good exercise combined with good food may will prepare us for a complete realization of our good fortune.
In the evening the youngsters of the party – Harold and I – danced with the Fraulein’s while the more sober element chatted over coffee.
